Black Friday has officially overtaken Boxing Day as Australia’s top shopping event, according to Future Publishing Australia.

New research shows 50% of Aussies are gearing up for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, compared to just 32% for Boxing Day sales. Online shopping is the go-to, with 45% planning to snag their deals online, making it a big win for e-commerce.

Chris Ferguson, commercial director at Future Publishing Australia, says Black Friday’s rise marks a “pivotal” shift in Aussie retail. With nearly 60% starting holiday shopping early, the pressure’s on to grab the best deals amid rising living costs.

Ferguson adds that 40% of shoppers are still undecided, so retailers have a “unique chance” to sway them with killer deals and convenience.

Despite cost-of-living pressures, 56% of Aussies plan to spend the same on Christmas as last year, while 21% are looking to splurge even more—especially on big-ticket items like fridges and washing machines.

For retailers, the message is clear: go big on Black Friday deals and make the shopping experience seamless to win over budget-conscious buyers.
