How Much Does a Digital Marketing Agency Cost in Melbourne? What You're Actually Paying For

'How much does an agency cost' and 'how much does marketing cost' are two different questions, and most pricing pages answer neither of them clearly. Here's a straight breakdown based on what businesses of different sizes actually pay in Melbourne, and what that money should be buying.

Typical retainer ranges by business size

Early stage or small business: Expect to pay somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000 a month for a blended service, usually covering one or two channels such as Google Ads plus basic SEO, or social media management plus content. At this level you're typically working with a smaller, generalist team.

Established SME: Budgets from $5,000 to $15,000 a month are common once a business needs multiple channels working together properly: paid search, SEO, social, email, and reporting that actually connects them. This is where most growing Melbourne businesses sit once marketing becomes a genuine growth lever rather than a box to tick.

Enterprise or multi location businesses: $15,000 a month and up, often significantly more, covering dedicated strategists, multiple paid channels at scale, CRO, and often a marketing consultant working alongside an internal team rather than replacing it.

These aren't hard rules. A business with a tight niche and clear offer can sometimes see strong results from the lower end of these ranges. A business in a saturated category will need to spend toward the top of its bracket just to be competitive.

What should be included at each tier

Below $5,000 a month, expect a lean team, standard reporting, and a narrower channel mix. That's not a criticism, it's appropriate for the budget. Above $5,000, you should be getting senior strategic input, not just execution, proper cross channel attribution, and a dedicated point of contact who understands your business, not a rotating account manager.

If you're paying enterprise level fees and still getting junior level thinking, that's the gap to interrogate before renewing.

Agency versus in house: the real comparison

A full time marketing hire in Melbourne, covering salary, superannuation, and on costs, typically lands between $90,000 and $130,000 a year for a mid level generalist, more for a specialist in paid media or SEO. That's before software, ad platform training, or the six months it usually takes a new hire to get fully up to speed.

An agency retainer at $5,000 to $8,000 a month, $60,000 to $96,000 a year, often buys access to a full team: a strategist, a paid media specialist, a content person, and someone across analytics, rather than one generalist wearing every hat. The trade off is control and dedicated focus. In house staff work only on your business. An agency splits attention across clients, though a good one structures its team so that doesn't show up in the work.

The right answer depends on how specialised your needs are and how much you value having marketing expertise sitting inside the business day to day.

Questions worth asking before you sign

Before committing to any retainer, ask directly: who on the team will actually work on my account, and what's their experience level? How often do we get reported to, and does that reporting tie back to leads or revenue rather than vanity metrics? What happens if I want to leave, is there a lock in contract, and how much notice is required?

A good agency answers all of these plainly. Vague answers to any of them are worth pausing on.

If you want a genuine assessment of what your business should be spending on marketing given your goals and current setup, we're happy to have that conversation without a sales pitch attached.
